Sheree da Costa

Sheree da Costa is an author/actor/dancer. Her recently penned memoir, Dancing With My Mother, is an intimate and honest retelling of her late son Joe’s battle with addiction, depression and the never-ending nightmare of HPPD, or Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder. HPPD made Joe’s life as a budding actor, filmmaker and writer untenable, due to the crippling and ongoing visual symptoms associated with the misuse of a little-known psychedelic, aged seventeen. Joe took his own life in 2020, aged twenty-seven. Dancing With My Mother is also a story of love, hope and humour, showcasing the eternal bond between mother and son. A bond that not even death can destroy.

Sheree’s first foray into the world of literature, Taking The Drop, co-authored with three of her closest friends and self-published via Vivid Publishing in 2011, is the life-affirming story of four women who took up surfing in their forties. Garnering excellent reviews in stalwart surfing publications such as Surfing World, and editorial coverage in Manly Daily and up-market women’s magazines, Taking The Drop has proven to be a timeless publication for women who desire inspiration to live life to the full, told via the lens of surfing. With a forward written by legendary Layne Beachley, an unprecedented seven-time World Surf Champion, Taking The Drop has certainly earned its place as a self-publishing success story.

As performer, Sheree has credits in film, TV and music theatre. She is an ex-Principal dancer with The Australian Ballet and former artist with Sydney Dance Co. Sheree appeared as cast in Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, and also appears in The Deb, a feature film directed and produced by Rebel Wilson. Of special note is her short film Dancing With My Mother, a self-devised semi-biographical short film tribute to her late son Joe, which successfully toured the film festival circuit in 2023 and 2024, gaining winner and selection laurels, including two wins for Best Actress at renowned international film festivals.
